World-famous Octoberfest in Munich: "Volksfest" or beer party?by Gabi Wieke, TextAndWeb
International beer party feeling can be experienced in one of the 14 beer tents of the Munich Octoberfest. After you have successfully passed the body-check at the entrance and snatched some (smaller or wider - depending on your hip size) space on one of the wooden benches. Spirits rise once you accomplish to gain the attention of one of the Dirndl-wearing, tight-lipped waitresses hasting around with their Mass mugs. And reach feaver pitch when the first bare breasts appear.
Historical scenes on the Munich Octoberfest - the traditional Octoberfest area ('Oide Wiesn')Bemoaning of demoralization on the Octoberfest is no longer justified. In preparation for the 200th anniversary of the Octoberfest in 2010, the Munich mayor and his fest committee had an idea: in a separate area of about 8.9 acres (36.000 square meters), a historical Octoberfest section was set up.
Giving people an idea of the original Octberfest was the committees keynote. They realized the project with emphasis on 'Gemuetlichkeit' and tradition. The public was enthusiastic about the concept. More than half a million visitors came to drink beer made by old recipes, try out ancient fairground rides and marvel at the horse race.
Octoberfest Munich - 200th anniversary?Strictly speaking, the Munich Octoberfest was held for 177th time in 2010. Due to cholera epidemics, 24 Octoberfests had to be canceled so far. Thus in 2010, the 200 year-old tradition of the Munich Octoberfest was celebrated.
Due to the favor the traditional fest found with visitors, the nostalgic event was repeated in 2011 with a separate historical fair - the 'Oide Wiesn', which means as much as 'ole fair'. Thousands had signed lists for its continuation and thus helped introduce a new crowd puller.
Tickets for 'Oide Wiesn' on the Munich Octoberfest sold out in 2011The historic event is indeed a crowd puller. More than 600.000 people came to experience ancient Volksfest atmosphere in 2011. This is yet another increase with regard to the number of visitors in anniversary year 2010. However, there will not be an 'ole fair' in 2012. The farmer's association has older rights. Their agricultural fair takes place in the same area. A contract from 1904 allows yearly festivities, which they only make use of every four years.
The Munich farmer's association celebrates another anniversaryIn 2012, the 200th anniversary of the farmer's association takes place. Festivities will include a large animal tent and different animal performances as well as a horse race. Atmosphere and flair are to be similar to the 'Oid Wiesn'.
Attractions on the 'Oide Wiesn' MunichEnjoy Bavarian culture, language, dialect music, and dance in the two oldfashioned beer tents. You will listen to music of wind and watch 'Goaßlschnoizer' (whip-cracking), 'Schuhplattler' (Bavarian folk dance which includes shoe smacking), and typical folk dance. The tents are called 'Zur Schönheitskönigin' with 5.000 seats and another 3.000 in the beer garden, and 'Tradition', the smaller tent. On wooden dance floors, you will shake a leg to Bavarian music. Landlords are Winklofer and Wieser from the Munich Ratskeller, a large traditional restaurant in downtown Munich.
If the Faster, higher, further of modern fairground rides are not your type of thing, you can ride the 'Kettenflieger Kalb' carousel from 1919, or, even more leisurely, the 'Fahrt ins Paradies' carousel. The 'Calypso' moves you around with the sound of Rock'n Roll.
Take a ride on old bicycles in the Velodrom, enter beer barrel competitions or take to the skies in one of the swingboats. Men can show their muscles and ring-the-bell, kids enjoy the kids carousel, the Punch and Judy show or the lemonade garden. Amusements are one Euro only.
The ole fairground stimulates memories and the longing for the old, the 'real' Bavaria.
The 'Oide Wiesn' will be back in 2013. Admission: 3 Euros.
